Are we missing the accelerated growth of a particular wealth segment which will overshadow the HNWI wealth base in the near future? INDONESIA WEALTH MANAGEMENT FORUM - 2023
Shangri-La Jakarta,Indonesia

Setting the Scene for the 2023 Indonesia Forum
On March 29 in Jakarta, a hand-picked set of experts will look in depth at the key trends and developments that emerged in 2022, which was a truly interesting vintage that built further on the many positive changes and advances that we saw in previous years. In short, Indonesia is poised for continuing economic expansion and further rapid growth and diversification of private wealth across the board, from the very rapidly expanding mass affluent market to the surprisingly large and also rapid-growth HNW and UHNW private client segments.
During the 4 panel discussions and the 6 presentations, our chosen experts will focus on as many of the core issues and development and challenges as possible. This is a brief introduction to some of the key topics and themes they will drill down into on March 29.
There is plenty happening in the Indonesia wealth management market, as incumbents and new entrants jostle for position, from new leaders coming to take the reins at some of the bigger name local and global banks and firms, to the arrival of new strategic partnerships, new strategic visions being launched to propel Islamic wealth management, so on and so forth.
The Indonesian financial markets are less mature than some of the fellow ASEAN countries, especially Singapore, and as HNW and UHNW clients love to spend time in, and to invest in or through Singapore, a major challenge has been to keep as much of the HNW and UHNW wealth at home as possible.
This means that Indonesia has therefore been working hard to boost its onshore proposition and diversify the products and advisory offering in order to keep as much of the ‘older’ AUM onshore, but also to make sure that as much of the newer wealth being generated remains under management in Indonesia, and that the growing ranks of younger wealthy inheriting so much of the founder/first-generation, even second-generation wealth are also properly serviced onshore. As part of this evolution, there is a rising focus on wealth, legacy and succession planning and structuring.
And of course, Indonesia is also propelled by the region-wide drive to digitisation to cater to the younger demographics, to build scale, to deliver greater client centricity and personalisation, and to improve efficiencies and productivity, all vital elements of thrusting Indonesia’s wealth management market further into the ‘new world’.
The digital transformation drive is especially vital as Indonesia is so vast – consisting of more than 17500 islands and spanning more than 5100km east to west and 1800km north to south!
Indonesia is also a Muslim-majority nation, and the drive towards Islamic wealth management is an increasingly important element of the overall model on offer in the country; hence we are seeing some interesting developments there.
There is certainly plenty of room for Indonesia’s wealth market to grow robustly alongside those more well-established offshore financial centres, as long as participants in Indonesia can manage the tighter regulatory demands, boost the array of investment products and solutions, and if they continue to develop the Islamic finance wealth market. At the same time, the incumbent players will need to compete energetically and smartly against new entrants that have been becoming more prominent locally as the regulators continue to gradually liberalise the financial markets.
Hubbis will assemble a set of genuine wealth management experts, as well as specialists on digital transformation, investment migration, tax and trusts, and others on March 29 in Jakarta. They will aim to set Indonesia’s progress in the context of developments in other populous ASEAN markets, such as Thailand and the Philippines. They will analyse where there needs to be more progress and what additional building blocks need to be put into place in order to facilitate such progress, such as regulatory liberalisation, greater investment by the local and international players, more trendsetting by the newer JV partnerships between onshore and offshore partners, and so forth. In short, together they will pinpoint these, and many more key evolutionary developments and trends and they will, of course, zoom in on the significant potential that Indonesia’s wealth management market offers onshore and offshore competitors.
