Challenges for Growth for Independent Wealth Managers in Singapore

    • The cost of everything is increasing – what are the consequences of this? Is there any solution?
    • Specifically - How are you dealing with the costs of compliance and the fact most banks are unable to meet the demands of account opening? Are there too many duplications of effort – between the IAM and custodian bank?
    • How are you dealing with the increase in competition?
    • Time for big consolidation in this Industry?
    • How should we deal with ‘black sheep’? What are the business models that are relevant to this segment? Should there be higher hurdles to setting up an EAM/MFO?
    • When will Singapore embrace the transparent models already in place in the West? ‘Fee only advice versus hidden charges’ - ‘Honesty and trust’ Is it time to define more clearly what the word ‘Independent’ means?
    • Will Geopolitical risks eventually drive private wealth to the Middle East?
    • Is there a lack of skilled manpower and good wealth managers?
    • Will tighter controls and increased scrutiny kill the growth within this segment?

INDEPENDENT WEALTH MANAGEMENT FORUM - Singapore 2024

The Grand Ballroom, JW Marriott Singapore South Beach,Singapore

Summary

Setting the Scene for the 2024 Forum

The independent wealth sector - comprising External Asset Managers (EAMs), Multi-Family Offices (MFOs), Single-Family Offices and the larger Independent Financial advisors (IFAs) - has grown apace and with considerable dynamism over the past 15-20 years in Asia’s fast-expanding private wealth markets, especially in Singapore and Hong Kong.

Singapore’s independent wealth market has enjoyed robust support from the regulators and from the government and key institutions, including significant liberalisation to attract more wealth to their shores, particularly in the form of UHNWIs and families seeking to establish family offices.

However, while the independent wealth management (IWM) sector in Singapore (and also in Hong Kong) has enjoyed significant growth, it still lags behind more established regions such as Europe and the US. For instance, boutique firms in Switzerland manage around 30% of assets, compared to a modest 10% or perhaps less in Asia.

Why should this be and what is needed to further propel the independent wealth community forward? After all, there has been an extraordinary increase in high net worth (HNW) and ultra-high net worth (UHNW) private wealth across the globe, especially in Asia. All this means that the IWM industry holds even greater potential for expansion for current market players and newcomers.

The Hubbis Singapore INDEPENDENT WEALTH MANAGEMENT FORUM 2024 will delve deep into the intricacies of Asia’s wealth management market, identifying the sources of future growth, and the strategies necessary for both established independents and new market entrants to leverage these opportunities and outlining the many challenges ahead, including intensifying competition, a tougher than ever compliance environment, rising costs and the shortage of talent.

The event will drill deep into the strategies, culture, products, investments, advice, expertise, technologies, talent, and methodologies essential to capitalise on the numerous upcoming opportunities. The answers revolve around the growth prospects of the independent wealth sector, which are evident. However, with more complex global investment scenarios and challenging geopolitical landscapes, strategies need refining and adaptation to fully realise this growth potential.

The potential in the market is undeniable, but independent firms must maintain a focused vision on their goals and plot a strategic path for their businesses, their teams, and their clients. This approach will enable them to mirror the success of counterparts in mature markets, such as Switzerland. The timing and market demand are perfect for Asia's IWM sector, but the challenge lies in adopting a model that captures a larger share of the region's growing asset under management (AUM).

Established players have generally catered to a more traditional, possibly older clientele. However, the shifting landscape indicates a growing wealth in the hands of Asia’s younger generations. Therefore, the IWM sector needs to engage these younger or potential clients by offering innovative products, services, and approaches to attract and retain them. And as a consequence, there is rising demand for estate & legacy planning & advisory, as well as for strategies to connect to the next and younger generations.

Moreover, how will the IWM sector broaden its investment scope to include not just mainstream public markets but also private and alternative assets? And what role will digital tools play in enhancing operational efficiency, improving relationship manager/advisor productivity, and streamlining onboarding/KYC/AML and other processes through to portfolio consolidation and reporting? Are digital assets an area where the independents will make particular headway, or does caution still prevail?

There are also challenges around cost, with Singapore notoriously expensive in terms of offices, staff, RMs, advisors and other areas of expertise. Will this mean that there needs to be more consolidation, with smaller players succumbing to the advances of larger competitors, and thereby improving scale and the overall operational business model?
