Charmian is a counsel in Reed Smith’s IP, Tech & Data Group in Singapore. She focuses her practice in the area of data, technology, cyber and commercial law. Charmian is particularly active in projects relating to data protection and privacy compliance, including information governance and data-retention mapping exercises, reviewing and negotiating data-processing agreements, advising on cross-border data-sharing agreements, crafting internal policies and external privacy notices/statements for domestic, regional and global implementation, conducting data protection impact assessments and audits, cybersecurity table-top exercises, and staff trainings. Her experience extends to working with clients on managing time-sensitive cyberattacks and internal threat incidents. She has provided advice and guidance on a wide spectrum of issues relating to data security, access and monitoring, and breach management and reporting. Charmian has also assisted companies in successfully resisting regulatory sanctions for data- and cyber-related investigations. She is frequently consulted on data protection implications arising from digitisation initiatives, including in the launch of digital products or e-commerce solutions, transition to electronic management systems, data migration projects (e.g., to cloud platforms), procurement of software/technology and systems integrations. Charmian has acted for multinational clients operating across a wide range of sectors, including finance, insurance, infocommunications and technology, media and entertainment, health care and life sciences, and energy and natural resources.
