We are delighted to report that Hubbis will be hosting the next annual Malaysia Wealth Management event in Kuala Lumpur on May 8th for the Private Wealth Management Community.

The event will feature the half-day-plus format we introduced with great success in 2022 to deliver the most efficient and engaging agenda, discussions and networking, beginning at 09.00 and ending at 14.00 after lunch (for those that would like to stay).

Very simply, the event will center on the progression of wealth management in Malaysia's evolving and diverse market.

Within Malaysia, the private wealth management industry has seen considerable growth recently, adapting to meet the dynamic requirements of high-net-worth (HNW) clients. Technological advancements have driven a digital shift in the sector, with numerous private banks and wealth managers integrating digital strategies to enhance client service and boost operational efficiency. Wealth managers are now providing tailor-made investment options designed specifically for the unique needs and objectives of HNW individuals. This approach encompasses more individualized portfolios, alternative investment opportunities, and bespoke wealth planning services.

Furthermore, private banks are broadening their offerings beyond conventional wealth management, including an array of financial solutions like insurance and comprehensive wealth planning services.

Our goal is to bring together a relevant group of professionals in the private wealth management community. Specifically senior management, gatekeepers and RM’s at Local Retail Banks and Private Banks. Also invited will be local Asset Management Companies, Securities Firms, Independent and digital wealth managers. Also in attendance will be professional advisers - like lawyers and tax specialists.

Summary

Setting the Scene for the 2024 Malaysia Forum

On May 8th, a carefully selected group of specialists will delve deep into the significant trends and progressions that surfaced in the past 12-18 months, and look ahead to the rest of 2024 and beyond. This year was notably captivating, building on the substantial positive shifts and advancements witnessed in prior years. Essentially, Malaysia is on the cusp of continued economic growth and rapid diversification of private wealth across various sectors, ranging from the burgeoning mass affluent market to the impressively large high-net-worth (HNW) and ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW) private client segments.

There is plenty happening in the Malaysian wealth management market, as incumbents and new entrants jostle for position, from new leaders coming to take the reins at some of the bigger name local and global banks and firms, to the arrival of new strategic partnerships, new strategic visions being launched to propel Islamic wealth management, so on and so forth.

The Malaysian financial markets are more mature than most of the fellow ASEAN countries aside of course from Singapore, and as HNW and UHNW wealth is relatively older, more of those clients have, for years, and often decades, spread their investments across the border to Singapore, or further afield to Hong Kong or even to London and Switzerland.

A core challenge for Malaysia has therefore been to boost its onshore proposition and diversify the products and advisory offering in order to draw more of the AUM back onshore, but also to make sure that as much of the newer wealth remains under management in Malaysia, and that the growing ranks of younger wealthy inheriting so much of the founder/first-generation, even second-generation wealth are also properly serviced onshore.

Malaysia is also driven by a regional push towards digitization, aiming to cater to younger demographics, scale up operations, enhance client-centric and personalized services, and improve efficiency and productivity. These are all crucial for propelling Malaysia's wealth management market into the forefront of the 'new world'.

Malaysia also has a significant percentage of Muslims in its population, and the drive towards Islamic wealth management is an increasingly important element of the overall model on offer in Malaysia. Big players such as Maybank are driving this segment of the market forward.

The Hubbis Forum on May 8 will analyse how Malaysia’s wealth market is evolving to cater to the evolving client base of today and look ahead to the coming years, and how it can compete more effectively with the offshore models that many of the older wealthy in the country have traditionally sought out since the 1990s, when the country’s private wealth really started to flourish and boom.

There is certainly plenty of room for Malaysia’s market to grow robustly alongside those more well-established offshore financial centres, as long as participants in Malaysia can manage the tighter regulatory demands, boost the array of investment products and solutions, and as they continue to develop the Islamic finance wealth market. At the same time, the incumbent players will need to compete energetically and smartly against new entrants that have been becoming more prominent locally as the regulators gradually continue to liberalise the financial markets.

There is ample opportunity for Malaysia's market to expand robustly alongside more established offshore financial centres. This growth hinges on navigating tighter regulatory demands, expanding investment products and solutions, and continuing to develop the Islamic finance wealth market. Meanwhile, incumbent players must compete effectively and intelligently against emerging local contenders as the financial markets gradually liberalise.

The Forum will cover as many fundamental issues, developments, and challenges as possible. To do so, Hubbis will convene a team of well-known and respected wealth management professionals, as well as experts in digital transformation, investment migration, tax, fiduciary services & trusts, HNW insurance, alternative investments and many other critical areas.

So, we would be delighted if you can join us on May 8th in Kuala Lumpur, and enjoy building knowledge, insights, ideas, and peer group relationships across the broad spectrum of Malaysia’s wealth market.
