Does anyone know the direction of travel for the world’s economies, for equities, fixed income, real estate, alternative assets of many different types? The answer, in reality, is ‘no’, but therein lie both the opportunities and the challenges.
Whatever new dawn is ahead for the world of business, for investors and even for the social and family lives we have long cherished, the world has changed, and in ways not seen in our lifetimes. The chaos wrought on economies, businesses, government finances, individual liberties and of course, in the financial markets has been dramatic and shocking to all. What then is the next phase for Asia’s wealthy investors as the world struggles to escape the straitjacket of lockdowns and economic malaise, of rising unemployment and burgeoning state debt, and as they re-calibrate their investment portfolios in the face of all these events?
The Hubbis Digital Dialogue of January 21 will briefly review the events of 2020 to set the scene, but the debate will be far more forward focused on the implications for the world of investments for the immediate future in 2021, set of course against the potential economic and investment landscape of the years beyond. Our panel of experts will also discuss how the wealth management community is responding by helping their private clients build a new relationship in their portfolios between equities, fixed income/debt and also between publicly traded, liquid assets and alternative, less liquid, longer-term holdings such as precious metals, VC, PE, private debt, hedge funds, private real estate and other alternative investments.
The experts on the panel will attempt to explore key elements of mainstream portfolio construction, the new norms of valuation, the growing relevance of alternative assets, the implications for self-management versus discretionary portfolio management, risk management in the (hopefully) post-coronavirus world, the implications for derivatives and structured products, leverage and its dangers, and the experts will frame the entire discussion amidst the responsibilities of the wealth management providers to their clients in this brave new world.
