HUBBIS INVESTMENT FORUM - Singapore 2023

The Glasshouse, Andaz Hotel,Singapore

Summary

Where are we Now?

In the words of the remarkable David Bowie in his last famous release – Where Are We Now? The Hubbis Investment Solutions Forum will have as its main target the mission of drilling down into where the world’s investment markets are today, where they are heading and how the wealth management industry at large in Asia can help its private clients – from HNW and UHNW individuals to mass affluent investors – build or adapt their portfolios in the face of the many significant challenges the world has been facing since early 2022, many of which look set to persist well into 2024 and potentially beyond. Who, for example, thought that by later 2023, the war in Ukraine would still be raging, that the US Federal Reserve might have raised rates 11 times since early 2022, and the UK 14 times since December 2021, and potentially with more hikes to come? In short, since the end of 2021, the world of investments is a very different place.

And where are we going?

Whatever the particular view espoused, there is no doubt that private clients the world over have needed to adjust their portfolios in the face of these set of circumstances. But how? And how can the wealth management community, particularly in Singapore, best serve them with optimised advice, products and service? Our more than 25 hand-picked experts speaking on the panels and delivering presentations and Workshops will tackle precisely these issues, head-on.

Private Wealth Management in Singapore – Evolving the proposition

This investment event is in Singapore, where all the vested interests have been working assiduously to build and evolve the overall wealth management proposition, aiming to draw in more and more expertise, and more and more AUM from HNW and UHNW clients in the region and worldwide. The first discussion of the day will focus on Singapore’s role in the regional/global wealth management landscape, discussing government incentives, regulation, the competitive landscape, the wealth, professional services and fiduciary ecosystems, the offerings of the private banks compared with the EAM community, developments around digital investment platforms, custody, and the direction of travel ahead.

Navigating challenging investment markets

We all know how confusing and volatile the global equity markets have become, from the US to China and with only a few exceptions, such as India. The assembled experts will debate how Asia’s mass affluent, HNW and UHNW investors should be adjusting their holdings to position their portfolios for the future. Which sectors, countries or regions offer the most potential as things stand right now? How do you find income across the world of equities? How do you inflation-proof your portfolios? What sort of time horizon should you be looking at for your portfolios to yield the best outcomes?

Should investors be shifting from growth towards value and cyclical, or back again? From developed markets to EM? Should China play a more significant role in the EM holdings, or is the spate of bad news there a major negative? Should wealthier investors move even more robustly from public to private assets, including greater exposures potentially to Asian and other emerging markets? Should portfolios contain more alternatives such as property, gold, or even cryptos and digital assets?

And what about the world of fixed income now that interest rates in the major developed economies are much higher, and perhaps selectively could rise even further? Do investors stick to the very short end? Do they venture down the credit curve, for example to the subordinated debt of well-rated financial institutions? Do they focus on sovereign, quasi-sovereign or credit?

Whatever the investment proposition, enhanced engagement with clients is essential

Helping to devise and curate better portfolios for private clients is only a portion of the challenge for the wealth management community. It is also vital to enhance engagement and client centricity.

In Asia’s dynamic wealth management markets, there is a widespread drive to greater personalisation of the investment offering and to more multi-faceted engagement with the clients, whether they are mass affluent, HNW or even UHNW investors. Moreover, investors in Asia’s buoyant economies are becoming ever younger, partly because the NextGens are inheriting such vast wealth – trillions of dollars in scale – and partly because private wealth creation is so robust; the result is a relatively younger and tech-savvy market that represents the next wave of the market for the banks and EAMs.

In all cases, these providers need to be able to deliver a seamless, interactive, and tailored offering that is highly relevant to their clients’ lifestyles, their needs and their aspirations for the decades ahead, and importantly, deliverable online or mobile. Moreover, clients in the HNW and UHNW segments are also wanting the optionality of self-directed investing supported by the hybrid wealth management proposition combining the best of digital tools and RM support & advisory.

To achieve these goals, the application of well-formulated, forward-thinking management strategies and the selection of the best digital solutions are required, as new and smarter approaches and better technology revolutionise the offerings and efficiencies of private wealth managers and the broader wealth management community in the region. And of course, external digital/electronic investment platforms, replete with their expanding and highly cost-effective smorgasbord of offerings across the wealth spectrum, are an essential part of the evolution.

In short, client engagement leads to more AUM, more guided investment activity, better delivery of advice, greater confidence engendered in DPM, and better outcomes for all parties involved.

The specialists – how the independent wealth managers can compete effectively with the private banks

The independent wealth management segment has grown apace in Asia, and there is much more growth potential ahead, given the penetration rates of the independents in Europe, for example. The growth to date has, therefore, been from a relatively low base in the past 15 years roughly since the GFC, but it has been impressive, especially out of Singapore and Hong Kong.

The selected Hubbis expert speakers will drill down into how the independent wealth market in Singapore (and more broadly in Asia) is developing and where it can best compete with the global private banks, the boutique internationals and, of course, the expanding ranks of Asian private banks, led by names such as DBS and Maybank. What are the strategies around products, investment advice, technologies, talent and the vital approaches required to seize the many opportunities ahead?

Whatever the portfolios, the risk appetite, or the goals that private clients outline, Asian private clients need a highly professional point of access, and to compete effectively, win clients and build AUM, the independent wealth market has staked its future on delivering optimised advice, service and portfolio curation to its HNW and UHNW clients. And those clients need genuine experts who can filter, package, promote and then monitor these investments. The greater the relevance, the better the personalisation and the more accessible the delivery of information, advice, and products, the more optimal the outcomes will be.

Amidst all these highly relevant discussions at the event, there will also be a set of exciting presentations and workshops covering a wide range of investment, engagement, platform, and other key topics.

Please join us on November 1, 2023, for what will certainly be a timely Forum.
