Profile:
Ruben is a lawyer in the Family Asset Protection team – part of the firm’s wider global Private Wealth group. He advises ultra-high net worth clients, professional trustees, private banks and family offices in complex international cases. He has developed a niche practice advising at the ‘intersection’ of family and chancery work, with many of his cases involving interrelated matrimonial and private client issues. His clients include industrialists, royalty, leading entrepreneurs and wealthy international families with connections to the UK. He regularly advises high-profile families and public figures, for whom discretion is key. Ruben specialises in asset protection with a focus on preventing litigation and preserving family wealth. Much of his work is in the context of family governance and wealth planning.He has extensive experience preparing prenuptial and postnuptial agreements for internationally based clients with assets and interests in multiple jurisdictions. He also advises on the application and enforcement of foreign nuptial agreements in the English courts. He regularly advises on the creation, operation and management of international trust, corporate and other asset holding structures to ensure wealth is protected in the event of a divorce or family dispute. When disputes arise, he advises in complex high-value cross-border family litigation. He has particular expertise in cases involving contentious trusts and advising professional trustees (both on and offshore) within international divorce proceedings. He works closely with offshore firms on related trust litigation in jurisdictions including Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Cayman, Bermuda, BVI and the Bahamas. Most of Ruben’s work has an international dimension. He spent five years practising in Hong Kong and continues to work closely with clients across Asia. He has a particular focus on those with interests in China, Hong Kong and Singapore and regularly advises wealthy Asian families with connections to the UK. He also has considerable experience in cases involving US and European (in particular Swiss) clients and issues. Ruben has been recommended in the Private Client Global Elite ‘Ones to Watch’, Citywealth’s Top 100 Future Leaders, Citywealth’s Leaders List and Legal 500. He has written for a number of industry leading journals and publications and has spoken at international conferences. Given the nature of his clients, most of Ruben’s cases are settled discreetly and in private.
